What is Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics?

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics is the specialty of dentistry that studies, prevents and corrects dental malposition of the jaws and dental arches. The objective is to reestablish an adequate balance and function, achieving an improvement in facial esthetics.

From what age is orthodontics recommended?

From the age of 5 years it is possible to detect malocclusions or alterations in oral function that may lead to dental or bone malocclusion.

What problems can we detect and solve with Orthodontics?

  • Dental crowding or diastemas.
  • Compressed jaws, protruded or retruded jaws.
  • Alterations of the occlusion (bite) related to dental absences or gum problems.
  • Parafunctional habits leading to malocclusions such as atypical swallowing with tongue thrusting.
  • Snoring/sleep apneas due to a retruded mandibular position.

How can Orthodontics help us?

  • Rehabilitate proper function and chewing.
  • Facilitate oral hygiene, thus helping to prevent periodontal problems and cavities.
  • Improve the smile and facial aesthetics, in addition to gaining self-esteem.
  • Avoid unnecessary tooth wear.
  • Recover lost spaces for implant restorations.
  • Maintain space for permanent teeth and their proper eruption.

Orthodontics and Orthopedics for Children

From neuroocclusal rehabilitation (composite tracks for simple crossbite cases in young children) to more complex appliances such as mandibular advancement appliances, we use a series of techniques adapted to each child or need according to their age.

It is important to detect and prevent future malocclusions to avoid future extractions or orthognathic surgery (surgery of the facial bones).

Normally a first orthopedic phase (with braces) is usually performed to correct the jaws (facial bones) and then an orthodontic phase (with braces or aligners) to correct the position of the teeth.

Orthodontics with metal and/or ceramic brackets (esthetic)

It can be done at any age once we have all the permanent teeth.
We use low friction brackets that allow teeth to align faster.
Ceramic brackets are a more aesthetic alternative to metal brackets.

Orthodontics with aligners

As for the most esthetic, comfortable and less urgent option, we have clear aligners, which are a good option for both children and adults.

TREATMENT PROCESS

1. Orthodontic Visit and Evaluation

A brief visit is made in which we make an assessment and diagnosis of the patient and explain possible treatment options.

2. Orthodontic Study

We take the necessary records to perform the orthodontic study (photos, x-rays and models/scans) and the result of the study is delivered and explained to the patient.

3. Treatment

Treatment times are variable, usually ranging from 6-8 months in simple cases to 2 years in more complex cases. Monthly check-ups are generally performed.

4. Once the treatment is finished

Maintenance and/or retention is necessary to maintain the results obtained with orthodontics over time. We usually perform annual check-ups.
